Geoblocking

Geoblocking

Details

Geoblocking is a security feature which is available on all Danske Bank personal debit and credit cards. It allows cardholders to restrict the use of their card(s) to certain geographic areas or to prevent the use of the card for internet transactions, reducing the likelihood of fraud.

You can easily manage the Geoblocking settings on your debit and credit card(s) in eBanking, Mobile and Tablet Banking Apps. Alternatively you can contact the Bank on 028 90049221 or ask an Adviser in any branch. Changes are made with immediate effect.

It is also possible to set an expiry date on settings, which means if you wish to travel abroad for a short period, and you have blocked the area you are travelling to, you can unblock that area until the date you return home and it will then automatically block again.

Geoblocking is an additional card security feature and does not replace our normal fraud checks.

General

What is Geoblocking?

Geoblocking is a new security feature on our personal debit and credit cards that allows cardholders to place security settings on their card(s), to prevent use of the card(s):

  • In specific geographic regions - you can restrict use of your card in parts of the world where you have no plans to travel to; restrictions are set by geographic region rather than at individual country level.

  • and/or

  • For internet transactions – it is also possible to block internet transactions. Blocking internet transactions will not only block online transactions but will also block some recurring transactions (sometimes known as continuous payments). If you have recurring transactions set up on your card, you should not block your card for internet use to ensure you do not block recurring transactions.

Note: It is not possible to set geographic limitations for internet transactions. This means that where a specific geographic region is blocked but internet transactions are not, then it is possible for an internet transaction to take place in that geographic region. For example, if you choose to restrict the use of your card in Asia but do not restrict use of your card for internet transactions, then transactions made via the internet and processed in Asia may be paid.
  • What type of transactions will not be authorised if internet is blocked?

The following types of transactions will not be authorised if the card is blocked for use on the internet:

  • Online purchases using the internet where merchant sites use 3D Secure, sites secured by SSL which display a padlock in the browser URL and sites which use Pass Through wallets in the checkout process such as Google checkout or Amazon checkout
  • Recurring transactions due to be applied to your account e.g. subscription payments funded from a debit or credit card
  • Crediting funds to a Pre-loaded Electronic Wallet (e.g. Barclays Pingit, Starbucks App) from a debit or credit card
  • Why has Danske Bank introduced Geoblocking?

Geoblocking has been introduced to improve the service we provide to our debit and credit card customers. This feature will also help reduce the number of losses due to counterfeit card fraud by decreasing the number of situations where card fraud is possible. Geoblocking is an additional card security feature and does not replace our normal fraud checks.

How will customers benefit from Geoblocking?

Geoblocking has a number of benefits for customers:

  • Enhanced security – preventing cash withdrawals with skimmed cards (“skimming” is the copying of card data at an ATM and transferring the data to another card) in high-risk countries.

  • Peace of mind for customers - Geoblocking reduces the likelihood of fraud and therefore customers do not have to face the inconvenience and stress of reporting the card misuse, notifying the bank of any loss and; having the card blocked and waiting for a new card.

  • Customers can manage their own card settings - it’s easy to authorise / block worldwide use of the card. Geoblocking settings can be amended with immediate effect, at any time through eBanking or the Mobile and Tablet Bank Apps . Customers can also contact us by telephone or by visiting a branch to amend their settings.
  • Do I still need to advise the bank if I intend to use my card abroad?

Yes, you do. Geoblocking is an additional card security feature and does not replace our normal fraud checks. This means that even though your card may be open for use in a geographic region, it is still possible for a transaction not to be authorised if fraud is suspected.

Is there a charge to use Geoblocking?

No, this is a free service we are providing to our customers..

Am I still protected against fraudulent transactions if I use the Geoblocking feature on my card(s)?

Yes, customers using the Geoblocking feature are entitled to the same level of consumer protection against fraud, as is currently provided.

Why do I need to register a mobile phone number as a condition of using the Geoblocking service?

Where the card has been blocked for use in a specific geographic region or on the internet and a transaction is attempted, we will notify you by sending a text message. This allows you to take appropriate action – if you have not tried to make this transaction you will need to contact the bank to report potential fraud, or, if you are trying to make the transaction, you can adjust your Geoblocking settings to lift the restriction.

If you do not have a mobile phone number registered with the bank, we will be unable to alert you if a transaction is attempted in a restricted region.

In order to receive a text message, you must not have opted out of receiving text messages from Danske Bank. If you have, then to receive Geoblocking texts you must opt in. You can do this by texting OPT IN to 60999 (standard rate text for your network provider applies).

    Managing Geoblocking Settings

How can the settings on my debit or credit card be changed using the Geoblocking feature?

You are able to change settings whenever you wish and the changes will be made with immediate effect. It is also possible to set an expiry date on settings, which means if you wish to travel abroad for a short period, and you have blocked the geographic region you are travelling to, you can unblock that region until the date you return home and it will then automatically block again.

    Settings can be changed:

Online – you can change the settings using eBanking or our Mobile and Tablet Banking Apps. Note:Geoblocking will not initially be available on the Windows Mobile App.

By telephone – you can contact the Bank on 028 90049221 and instruct the Adviser to adjust the Geoblocking settings for you.

In Branch – you can ask an Adviser in any branch to change your settings.

Will the bank set any Geoblocking settings on my existing or new card(s)?

No, initially we are launching Geoblocking as an ‘opt-in’ service. This means that no automatic Geoblocking settings will be applied to debit or credit cards by us. Instead we are giving cardholders the opportunity to change the Geoblocking settings on their card based on their own personal circumstances.

Will the bank ever use Geoblocking to set restrictions on my existing or new card(s)?

It is likely that in the future we may set some restrictions on cards. Most banks that offer a Geoblocking service do set restrictions on customers’ cards. If we decide to apply Geoblocking settings on debit and / or credit cards, we will provide you with 2 months’ notice. However, under certain circumstances (e.g. if we believe that there is a significantly increased risk of fraudulent activity on cards in a specific geographic region or where use of the card in a specific geographic region would be unlawful), we may use Geoblocking to restrict that geographic region immediately and advise you afterwards.

Where both parties have debit cards on a joint account, if one account holder uses Geoblocking to set restrictions on their card, will the other account holder’s card be restricted in the same way?

No, each card is treated individually and each cardholder can manage their own Geoblocking settings. This is also the case for any additional cards that have been issued on the account.

How quickly can Geoblocking settings be changed?

Once the card settings are changed, they are effective immediately.

In which geographical regions can cards be blocked?

The geographic regions are detailed below:

    • United Kingdom
    • Europe (includes Republic of Ireland)
    • Asia
    • Middle East
    • Africa
    • North America
    • South America
    • Oceania Countries – e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Fiji etc.

A search facility is available in eBanking, Mobile and Tablet Bank Apps to establish which geographic region a specific country is in.

Note – as the card issuing country is United Kingdom, it is treated as a separate geographic region. This allows you to block the rest of the world if you have no plans to travel outside the UK. Therefore you can block Europe, without blocking the UK.

Will I still be able to use my card in the Republic of Ireland if I block Europe?

No, if you block Europe, your card will be blocked for use in the Republic of Ireland.

Can I temporarily lift a restriction to allow me to use my card during my holiday?

Yes, when managing your card settings, you can choose from the following options for each geographic region:

    • No – card can never be used in that region
    • Yes always – card can always be used in that region
    • Yes until – you enter a date which allows the card to be used in that region until the specified date and then it will automatically revert to 'No’

How can I change my card settings, if I am not an eBanking user?

You can ask the bank to amend your card settings, either by contacting us by telephone or in any branch. It is much more convenient however for you to manage your own settings, so we would encourage you to register for eBanking if you are not currently.

    Transactions

Will I be made aware if a card transaction has been attempted in an area that I have restricted?

Yes, we will send a text message to the mobile phone number you have registered with us to advise you of this. Therefore it is important that we have your up-to-date mobile phone number.

I would like to block my card for use in America as I have no plans to travel there but I regularly purchase goods online from retailers based in America - if I block my card for use in America, will I still be able to use my card online to purchase goods there?

Yes, as it is not possible to set geographic limitations for internet transactions. This means that where a specific geographic region is restricted but internet transactions are not, then it is possible for an internet transaction to take place in that geographic region.

Why will a Chip & PIN transaction be authorised in a region where my card has been restricted?

As Chip & PIN transactions are not as susceptible to fraud, it is very likely that it is you undertaking this transaction and you have forgotten to lift the restriction on your card before travelling. For your convenience, we will authorise this transaction and lift the restriction on that geographic region for a 4 week period, which should be sufficient to cover your period of travel.

We will advise you via text message that a transaction has been authorised and that we have lifted the restriction on that region for a 4 week period. You will also be provided with the date when the restriction will reapply to your card.

Where such a transaction is authorised and you have not made that transaction, then you must report this to the bank as a fraudulent transaction.

Are there any transactions not covered by Geoblocking?

Yes, offline transactions are outside the Geoblocking parameters. Examples of offline transactions would be some contactless, carparks, airplanes.
