Direct Debit

Direct debit makes it easy for you to pay regular expenses such as telephone and electricity bills. When you sign up to pay a bill by direct debit, we will make arrangements for the payment to be made on the due date. Direct debits can only be used for domestic payments and can only be debited on week days Monday - Friday.

With direct debit you can make sure that your bills are paid on time. All you need to do is check that there is enough money in your account to pay the individual bill when it is due.

We allow you up until 3.30pm to pay cleared funds into your account on the day a direct debit payment is due. After this time, you cannot be sure the payment will be made. If the item is returned unpaid, or we grant you an unarranged overdraft or unarranged excess, you may be subject to fees and service charges as detailed in our ‘Fees and service charges explained’ leaflet.

You should note that even if a direct debit payment appears on your list of transactions, creating an unarranged overdraft or an unarranged excess, this payment may still be returned if there is not enough money in the account at 3.30pm.

If you are a Danske Standard or Danske Discovery customer, it is not possible for your account to go into an unarranged overdraft or unarranged excess position. If there is not enough money in your account when we complete our initial funds check, you will not see the direct debit payment on your list of transactions. You can still lodge cleared funds up to 3.30pm on the day the direct debit is due to be paid.

The person you are paying must give us a direct debit mandate authorised by you.

What protection do I have?
If you make a payment by direct debit then you will be protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme. This protects you if a direct debit which you have not authorised is taken from the account. For example, if too much is taken, it is taken too early, it is taken after you have cancelled the direct debit or if you have not been given enough notice of a change to a direct debit which can vary. If any money is wrongly taken from the account under a direct debit then, as soon as we are told about it, we will refund the account.​​​​​
