Fees for transferring funds abroad

Here you can see how the cost of transfers abroad is calculated.

With eBanking, you can transfer up to the available (cleared) balance in the sending account, or its equivalent in foreign currency, abroad.

When you fill out a transfer request, indicate what you have agreed with the payee. This determines who will pay the fees for the transfer.

If you make a cross-border transfer to a country in the European Economic Area (EEA), in an EEA currency, and without any currency being converted you must always choose 'SHA'. If you make a cross-border transfer to an EEA country in an EEA currency and the currency is converted, you can choose 'SHA' or 'OUR'. All other types of cross-border transfers can use any of the three 'charge clauses' SHA, OUR and BEN.

It is normal practice that you pay fees for sending the transfer out of the bank and the payee pays fees for receiving the transfer into the foreign bank.

Standard transfer

The sender and payee pay own bank costs (SHA)

If you choose this charge clause, you (the sender) and the person or organisation receiving the payment (the payee) will both have costs to pay. As the sender, you pay the costs charged by your bank. The payee pays all other costs including costs charged by the payee's own bank and any intermediary bank involved in handling the payment.

As the sender, you must pay £30 for payments made in Branch and £20 for payments made in eBanking and the payee pays all costs at the foreign bank.

The sender bears all the costs (OUR)

If you choose this charge clause, you (the sender) pay all the costs. You will pay the costs charged by us (as your bank) and the payee’s bank. In these circumstances, we will always charge you a minimum fee of £15, even if the payee's bank's fee is less than this.

As the sender, you must pay £30 for payments made in Branch and £20 for payments made in eBanking plus the foreign costs of £15.

The payee bears all the costs (BEN)

If you choose this charge clause, the payee pays all the costs. You will not have to pay any costs for making this transfer – the payee will pay the costs charged by us (as your bank), their own bank and any intermediary bank involved in handling the payment.

As the sender, you don’t pay fees. The foreign costs are covered by the payee.

Express transfer

The sender and payee pay own bank costs (SHA)

As the sender, you must pay £32 for payments made in Branch and £22 for payments made in eBanking and the payee pays all costs at the foreign bank.

**Additional fees
If you do not enter the BIC (Swift address) when making a transfer, the transfer requires manual processing in the Bank, for which we charge an additional fee of £6.00.

Euro payment instructions (which do not include a valid IBAN) to many countries in Europe will NOT be accepted for processing. Please visit our website for full details. An additional fee of £8.00 will be charged if the IBAN is not provided or is invalid.
