Identity theft is when someone gets your credit card or bank account number and buys goods in your name. Your personal data are the most exposed when you shop online. Shop only in trustworthy online shops.
How can you know that an online shop is safe?
Most online shops use a system that scrambles your payment information so that it can be read only by the shop and your credit card issuer.
You can never know for sure whether an online shop is safe, but here are some good indicators:
- The browser line of the page requesting your payment information starts with “https” (rather than “http”)
- Some browsers show a green mark or an icon of a closed padlock to indicate security. The absence of a mark or an open padlock may be signs of inadequate security.
